Book characters who speak a foreign language

In a previous post (What makes a book a page turner? August 17, 2012),
I mentioned there are different races and species in my novel. There is a common “Trader” language that all learn, but each have distinctive languages.

I have limited the foreign language usage to one race, and only when necessary. I believe if too much is used it could (a) slow down the pace of the book, (b) confuse the reader, and, (c) I’d need a glossary at the end of the book. (I suppose I might need a short one anyway.)

So, my query is: How would you use a foreign language in your book?
